Caylin Newton, the younger brother of former Heisman winner Cam Newton, is following in his brother’s footsteps to finish off his college career.
Newton announced on Twitter on Friday night that he will transfer to Auburn after starting his career at FCS program Howard. Auburn is already at the 85-player scholarship limit for the upcoming season, so Newton — who entered the transfer portal in October — will be a preferred walk-on for the Tigers. He will be immediately eligible as a graduate transfer.
Newton made a name for himself as a freshman at Howard, where he led the Bison to the largest point-spread upset in college history against UNLV in 2017. That season, Newton completed 133-of-263 passes for 2,432 yards and 13 touchdowns while rushing for another 753 yards and 12 scores in an offense helmed by one of Gus Malzahn’s former pupils, Brennan Marion. He earned MEAC Rookie of the Year honors that season as he led Howard to a 7-4 record and worked his way out of his brother’s shadow.
