The Atlanta Falcons seem to have seemingly gotten things worked out on the offensive side of the ball and are currently on a three-game winning streak. The Falcons have beaten the Cowboys, Seahawks, and Buccaneers during this three-week stretch.
This stretch has also featured a throwback to last year’s offense as they have been averaging more than 30 points and almost 400 yards per game. Julio Jones has been a beast and Matt Ryan is playing well once again.
The deep ball is one of the reasons that this resurgence has happened. An offense’s ability to stretch the field and keep the defense honest opens up passes underneath and the run game. Julio Jones has 172 receiving yards on passes that were 20 yards or more down the field.
Steve Sarkisian has also started to call more play action passes. This is terrific because Matt Ryan is one of the best in the league when it comes to running the fake run. Last season he had a passer rating of 118.2 on play-action and over the past three weeks, he has a passer rating of 126.8 on play action.
The Falcons are getting hot at the right time and are right back into the playoff race after being on life support for the first part of the season. If the Falcons are able to continue their success with Julio Jones on the deep ball and keep up the great offensive play calling, barring injuries, the team is well positioned to make another post-season run.
