Arthur Blank responds to McNair’s comments

Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank was present when Texans owner Bob McNair made the comment about not wanting “inmates running the prison”.

Blank described McNair as one of “the brightest, fair-minded, most concerned owners in the NFL.” He also said that the Texans owner chose a poor metaphor.

I think others heard it differently in the room and responded that way, but Bob like most people that are thoughtful and sensitive and caring which he is, he recognizes (a) poor choice of words in that context. Let me not defend it.

McNair later apologized for his words and said that he was not referring to players with his comments.

I used a figure of speech that was never intended to be taken literally. I would never characterize our players or our league that way.

After his comments became public, many of the Texans players decided to walk out of practice and all but six players took a knee before Sunday’s game in a show of unity.
