Isaiah McKenzie came into the season with so much promise and potential. He possesses elite speed and agility which is what makes people so excited about what he can do as a return man. The problem is not the speed, it’s his hands.
McKenzie was recently benched for muffed punts. He was inactive for two games and then came back against the Dolphins ready to make things right. Except he proceeded to muff yet another punt which cost his team two points and sent him back to the bench.
On Monday head coach Vance Joseph announced that Jordan Talyor would take over for the rest of the season and that McKenzie would be shut down until next season. He also made it clear that he’s not giving up on the rookie.
I’m not giving up on Isaiah. He was drafted to be our punt returner. He’s a young player. Right now, we can’t afford to chance the ball being on the ground.
The move makes sense despite the fact that the Broncos are going nowhere this season. Joseph is on the hot seat and can’t afford lost possessions as he tries to get a couple wins during the last few weeks of the season. Muffed punts can lead to lost possessions and free points for the other team.
The rookie has had six of those game-killing fumbles and its now in his head. Maybe all he needs is time to sit and reevaluate things and get back on track next season.
