Who will replace Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon at Oklahoma?

The Oklahoma Sooners come into the season with plenty of optimism. Baker Mayfield returns for his senior season as a Heisman candidate and is one the Maxwell Award hopefuls. Unfortunately, Mayfield will have to cope with the loss of running backs Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon, both of whom were drafted earlier this year.

The duo combined for 1809 yards and 19 touchdowns. Needless to say, their loss is a significant chunk of production from the Oklahoma offense. It isn’t all doom and gloom, however. The Sooners have a trio of talented backs coming into the program that all have the potential and chance to make significant impacts immediately.

First, 4-star recruit Trey Sermon will enter the program as a freshman. He played for Sprayberry High School in Marietta, GA. He finished the season with 825, averaging 117.9 per game. At 6’1” and 216 pounds he has the size to be a solid back in the Sooner rotation and will only stand to get bigger and stronger with the help of the Sooner training staff.

Second, 3-Star JUCO transfer Marcelias Sutton also hopes to compete for playing time. He’s a little bit smaller than Sermon at 5’10” and 195 pounds but has been tagged as an angry runner who has good burst. He also stands to make an impact on special teams as he can be lethal in the open field.

The third player to look out for is the 4-star recruit, Kennedy Brooks. He has the most impressive stats of the three backs set to compete for playing time. He attended Mansfield High School in Mansfield, TX. There he averaged 267.9 yards per game and finished the season with 2679 yards on the season. He possesses good size at 6’ and 197 pounds and with his talent should compete for a featured spot in the backfield rotation immediately.

Sooner fans should rest easy knowing that there is plenty of incoming talent to avoid a drop off of production from the 2016 season. With Mayfield returning and setting the goal of a national championship, there is plenty to be excited about this upcoming football season.
